The Biogas & Biomethane World Summit is Europe’s premier event dedicated to advancing the biogas and biomethane sectors. As the EU intensifies its efforts to meet ambitious climate goals, biogas and biomethane are increasingly recognized as essential components in the region’s energy transition. These renewable sources provide a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels, aiding in carbon reduction and supporting the EU’s commitment to a circular economy.
Europe’s biogas and biomethane market is poised for significant growth over the next decade, spurred by favorable policies, increased investments, and rapid technological advancements. The European Green Deal and Renewable Energy Directive (RED II) have set the stage for biogas to become a key player in the EU’s sustainable energy future, with biogas production projected to double by 2030. With these developments, the market value is expected to surpass €40 billion, making biogas indispensable for Europe’s net-zero ambitions.
However, the expansion of biogas and biomethane in Europe faces complex challenges, including regulatory inconsistencies across member states, technological limitations, and the need for a reliable and sustainable feedstock supply. Overcoming these obstacles will require a coordinated effort among industry stakeholders to innovate, invest, and collaborate effectively.
The Biogas & Biomethane World Summi brings together Europe’s foremost experts, including senior executives, technology innovators, EU policymakers, and investors, to discuss these challenges and shape a cohesive strategy for scaling biogas across the continent. The event will focus on groundbreaking technological advancements, regulatory harmonization, and effective strategies for biogas integration into European energy systems. Key discussions will address advanced biogas production technologies, biomethane infrastructure, sustainable feedstock sourcing, and biogas’s role in decarbonizing Europe’s transport and heavy industry sectors.
This summit offers more than insights—it’s a platform for collaboration within the European biogas ecosystem. With a comprehensive mix of regulatory discussions, technical workshops, and networking sessions, participants will access the latest research, European case studies, and innovative solutions tailored to the EU market. Context and Industry Challenges
As Europe aims to meet its decarbonization targets, biogas and biomethane have emerged as pivotal solutions in the renewable energy mix. However, their role in the energy transition is met with a complex set of challenges:
· Regulatory Hurdles. Policy fragmentation and inconsistencies across EU member states make scaling biogas production difficult. Regulatory frameworks, such as the Renewable Energy Directive (RED II), need clearer implementation paths and incentives for both producers and investors.
· Technological Bottlenecks. While advancements in biogas production technology have been significant, issues like feedstock diversity, biogas upgrading, and integrating biomethane into the existing energy infrastructure require further innovation.
· Market Volatility. The biogas market faces fluctuations in demand, making it challenging for producers to maintain financial stability and long-term investment.
· Sustainability and Scalability. Achieving sustainable production at scale without compromising environmental standards, especially in agricultural biogas projects, presents a major hurdle.
· Feedstock and Supply Chain Issues. Logistics and availability of feedstocks, ranging from agricultural residues to municipal waste, need optimization to ensure biogas production can meet increasing demand.

Biogas and Biomethane market size was accounted for USD 4.5 billion in 2023, is projected to reach USD 8.1 billion by 2031, with a CAGR of 6.5% during the forecast period of 2024 to 2031.
Biogas and biomethane today account for less than 3% of total bioenergy demand, and represent an even smaller 0.3% share of total primary energy
The future of biogas and biomethane cannot be considered separately from the broader context of the global energy system. There is a huge range of possible futures for global energy, depending on the pace of technological innovation, the ambition of energy policies, market dynamics, societal trends and many other factors.
The biogas and biomethane market has emerged as a pivotal player in the global transition towards sustainable energy solutions. Biogas, produced through the anaerobic digestion of organic matter such as agricultural waste, sewage sludge, and food scraps, is a renewable energy source with significant potential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating climate change. Biomethane, a purified form of biogas primarily composed of methane, holds particular significance due to its compatibility with existing natural gas infrastructure and its potential to serve as a reliable and environmentally friendly alternative to fossil fuels.
The market for biogas and biomethane is witnessing rapid growth driven by various factors, including increasing environmental concerns, stringent regulations aimed at reducing carbon emissions, and growing demand for renewable energy sources. Furthermore, advancements in biogas purification technologies, coupled with favorable government incentives and subsidies, are fostering market expansion and attracting investments from both public and private sectors.
