Innovation & Standards in Floating Solar

It is essential to gain understanding of systems and applied technology to ensure that these complex systems are developed, produced, installed, and operated in a safe and cost-effective manner if the sector is to preserve the trust of investors and regulators. The industry will be able to directly employ this new information in their projects by integrating it into design standards.

The industry currently relies on internal knowledge, but with such rapid expansion it will be beneficial for all partners to combine their efforts in order to lower costs while simultaneously developing cutting-edge technologies and design philosophies. By releasing the first design manual for floating PV systems in the world, DNV put standardisation on the map. Two separate JIPs will be used to carry out this work, each detailing the most important specifications for the design and analyses of the anchoring and mooring systems and the design and testing of floaters for usage in floating solar photovoltaics.

When the design standards are ready, they can be utilised directly as specifications when developing a project or a particular design. By optimising and standardising the design techniques, costs can be further decreased while ensuring the safety of the systems.

The two JIPs are a fantastic initiative to increase FPV adoption and bankability across various float technologies, including membranes, pure floats, and rafts. These efforts can further boost FPV's appeal as a cutting-edge technology while optimising the risk/cost element of floating solar by concentrating on efficient anchoring techniques and simulation tools.

The industry has a starting point that may be used to further pave the way to a standardised and streamlined industry by applying the recently issued DNV Recommended Practice DNV-RP-0584 Design, development and operation of floating solar PV systems.

When applying the results around the world and working with various regulatory organisations, the JIPs will have a strong standing point thanks to participation from key stakeholders including developers, designers, concept owners, and research bodies.
